1. How do I know if the fluids I am currently using are really
registered?
Many companies will claim or suggest they meet CFIA or NSF standards.
There is a big difference is between claiming to meet those standards
versus actually being registered with the correct authorities. Products
that claim to meet standards, but are not registered, are not accepted
or shown in either the NSF or the CFIA websites. It is easy to confirm
the product you are using is registered by visiting the CFIA (English/French)
or the
NSF.
2. What is the CFIA?
The CFIA is a Government of Canada body and the following is an excerpt
from the CFIA’s website.
Our Vision
To excel as a science-based regulator, trusted and respected by
Canadians and the international community.
Our Mission
Dedicated to safeguarding food, animals and plants, which enhances the
health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy.

The following is an excerpt from the NSF website.
NSF International, The Public Health and Safety Company™, a
not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, is the world leader in
standards development, product certification, education, and
risk-management for public health and safety. For 60 years, NSF has
been committed to public health, safety, and protection of the
environment. While focusing on food, water, indoor air, and the
environment, NSF develops national standards, provides learning
opportunities through its Center for Public Health Education, and
provides third-party conformity assessment services while representing
the interests of all stakeholders. The primary stakeholder groups

4. Who should be using approved food grade lubricants?
Food Grade Lubricants should be used in any food processing, cosmetics
or pharmaceutical facility whether it is for human or animal
consumption. These products should be used throughout the entire
manufacturing process i.e. from the time any raw materials arrives
until the finished product has been processed, packaged and is ready
for shipment. This practice is strongly suggested by the CFIA and NSF.

applications. If you have an application and cannot find the proper

9. How do I know if I need H1 or H2 products?
The following can be found on our acceptance letters from the NSF::
H1 products are acceptable as lubricants with incidental food contact,
for use in and around food processing areas. Such compounds
may be used on food processing equipment as a protective anti-rust
film, as a release agent on gaskets or seals of tank closures, and as a
lubricant for machine parts and equipment in locations in which there
is a potential exposure of the lubricated part to food. The
amount used should be the minimum required to accomplish the desired
technical effect on the equipment. If used as an anti-rust,
the compound must be removed from the equipment surface by washing or
wiping, as required to leave the surface effectively free of any
substance which could be transferred to food being processed.
H2 products are acceptable as lubricants where there is no possibility
of food contact in and around food processing areas. Such
compounds may be used as lubricants, release agents, or antirust films
on equipment and machine parts in locations in which there is no
possibility of the lubricant or lubricated part contacting edible
products.
